Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has been warned by police chiefs that authorities are currently unable to access foreign criminal records.

This means migrant workers who may have committed a crime in their home country will not be vetted to the same standard as British colleagues who must be checked for previous convictions.

From next year, a new body called the Independent Safeguarding Authority will check applicants for jobs working with vulnerable people against barring lists and criminal records.

However, a report on the new system by Cheshire Chief Constable Peter Fahy and North Yorkshire Chief Constable Grahame Maxwell warned it would not address the problem of the lack of checks on migrants, with some foreign countries not even holding a record of convictions. (Criminals in care homes)

In March, it was revealed that hundreds of illegal immigrants are working in British care homes, using fake documents to bypass criminal records checks.

A leaked official Home Office intelligence assessment warned that in some residential homes more than half the staff are illegal foreign workers, and cites cases including a Filipino murder suspect who used bogus references to get a job!

And even when it is found that hundreds of illegal immigarants and criminals are found to be working with the most vulnerable people in our society what happens? - nothing!

Because the government would rather cover up their failings than protect hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people in care homes!
