LEYHILL PRISON - NO FENCES!

Because of the government's panic over the prison crisis, large numbers of very high risk inmates, some of them dangerous sex offenders, are being moved to open prisons long before they should be considered for such a move. (Leyhill Prison - article)

And, like the tens of thousands of convicts who are being released early with no risk assessment, dangerous prisoners who are being sent to open jails will also NOT undergo a "risk assessment" - obviously not, for if they did it would be revealed that they are a MAJOR risk to everyone in the country!

Because, as Ann Owers has revealed, many of them are being sent to minimum security open prisons like Leyhill, which doesn't even have a perimeter fence, and now has up to 50 inmates considered as high or very high risk!

And Leyhill Prison already has an appalling record of escapes, including several murderers, and in May 2006 the BBC revealed that in one year 66 prisoners had simply walked out of Leyhill!

At that time a statement from the Prison Service said "Prisoners were rigorously risk assessed, particularly in regard to the risk they presented to the public."

But now "high risk" and "very high risk" offenders have been sent to Leyhill with absolutely NO risk assessment at all, thanks to New Labour's panic stricken attemps to solve a crisis of its own creation, which it turned its back on for ten years, denying there was any problem at all!

In her report Ann Owers said: "Leyhill received prisoners identified as high or very high risk, but such prisoners would not normally be able to work or visit outside prison - which called into question the point of them being in open conditions."

In May 2006, Leyhill Prison governor Richard Booty stated that prisoners at Leyhill would be returned to closed prisons "if risk assessments indicated a likelihood of non-compliance."

But these dangerous prisoners have already been SENT to Leyhill from closed prisons, and there is nowhere left to send them, except to simply let them go, and by sending them to prisons like Leyhill, this useless government has virtually done that!
