Judge Roger Scott said today that the government only appeared to be concerned with sexual offences or violent offenders when it came to keeping dangerous criminals in jail indefinitely! (Full story here)

His comments came as he jailed drug addict Neil McLaide for seven years describing him as "a severe danger to all elderly people, male or female, in the United Kingdom."

McLaide was sentenced to six years in jail in 2001 by Judge Scott, for a series of burglaries at the homes of elderly women, but was released in November 2004, and immediately committed the same offences again!

In addition to receiving a two-and-a-half year jail term for that offence, he was also ordered to serve an additional 12 months outstanding from his previous sentence. (Full report here)

McLaide was again released early on licence and two weeks later began re-offending committing 21 further crimes including burglary, deception and fraud!

At his trial he was only charged with three offences, but asked for the other 18 offences to be taken into consideration.

Again these offences involved thefts from vulnerable elderly people, including two elderly women who he robbed of hundreds of pounds and an elderly man whose wallet containing £150 he snatched from his lap.

Judge Scott told McClaide: "I have absolutely no doubt at all that when you are released you will commit crime again...you should be kept indefinitely in custody if it were allowed, but the Government only appears to be concerned with sexual offences or violent offenders for that."

McLaide was also supposed to have been staying at Salvation Army accommodation since his release, but like so many others was able to use it as a base while he was left free to commit crimes at will!

Neil McLaide is a perfect example of exactly what is wrong with the legal system in Britain today - a system which continually releases dangerous criminals unsupervised into the community with no concern at all for public safety because the government never built the prisons it promised it would!
