Bladerunner, the Essex-based company that makes the padded tops, revealed its best customers include retired men and women, bin men and bus drivers.

Barry Samms, the boss of the company, said he has sold more than 3,000 of the £65 Kevlar-lined hoodies since he started selling them in Britain a year ago.

He revealed a couple in their 90s bought the tops after they were burgled at knife point in London earlier this year.

Mr Samms said: "The stab-proof hoodie is much more popular with pensioners than it is with teen gang members.

"In fact, I don't think we've had a single call from a teenager.

"Most of our customers are people who work in the public service – nurses, doctors, tube drivers, bus drivers, paramedics, bin men and older people who are scared of crime.

"It is a very sad reflection on society when our old folk are so scared of crime they feel they need this kind of protection."

The item of clothing is made with aramid fibre – the material used in stab-proof vests, which are worn by police and soldiers around the world.

Mr Samms added: "We have businessmen who are travelling home late on the last train and they will wear one over their suit.

"Our customers are just average members of the public. They're certainly not the teenage gang members that some people have said would buy them.
