Warren Blackwell was wrongly jailed after he was picked out at an identity parade by a woman who claimed she had been indecently assaulted in an alley by an assailent with a knife on New Year's Day 1999.

Although there was no forensic evidence against him and he had no previous convictions, he was found guilty and spent three years and four months behind bars.

Only when the case was referred to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) was it discovered the woman was a "serial accuser" with a history of mental illness and self-harm, who, since her teens had changed her name eight times, her address three times and had made countless accusations against men of sexual assault and rape, including her own father ! The CCRC concluded that in Mr Blackwell's case she had "lied about the assault and was not attacked at all, her injuries being self-inflicted" and he was released fom jail in September 2006.

However, although her identity was protected by law she was later unmasked in the House of Lords by Labour peer Lord Campbell-Savours, who named her as Shannon Taylor, using parliamentary privilege.

But if that was not enough injustice inflicted upon an innocent man, Warren Blackwell has now been told that he must repay the Home Office £6800 "board and lodging" for the time he spent in jail ! (Full story here)

The money will be deducted from the compensation he is to receive for being wrongly jailed !

Mr Blackwell, 37, said: "I can't believe it...I was jailed not just for a crime I didn't do, but for one that never even happened in the first place...burglars and murderers who actually did commit a crime, and deserve to be in jail, don't get charged for being in prison. So why charge me?"

He said the ruling amounted to the guilty staying in jail for free, while the innocent are charged.

But in Britain today it is innocent men like Warren Blackwell who spend more time in jail than convicted killers and are then charged for that "privilege" while the killers stay there for free !
