A THREE MILLION POUND website - www.police.uk - launched by the Home office so the public could post tip-offs to the police about yobs and anti-social behaviour in their area has closed - because the police didn't use it !

It was expected that "crime maps" would be drawn up up from these tip offs and reports sent for action to be taken.

But the police didn't use it and so the whole project has been abandoned at a total loss to the taxpayer ! (Full story here)

All that is left on the site is a message saying:"Unfortunately the www.police.uk service is not available at present. Please contact your local force regarding Police Direct and other police messaging services."

Project leader Chief Constable Peter Neyroud admitted: "Only a handful used it to any significant degree. Expenditure of such a large sum on a narrowly distributed service could not be justified."

But it is believed the REAL reason behind the closure is that the police didn't want any more crimes reported because it would push up their crime rates !

And of course it would help to show the REAL crime rates, now at a terrifying high and escalating every day as more and more criminals are no longer sent to jail !

But since the website also says: "A new system has been developed and is currently being tested", we can expect more millions of pounds of taxpayers money to be thrown down the drain marked "Home Office Failures" !

The failure was uncovered by Tory peer Lord Marlesford who called it "another Home Office shambles !"

Lib Dem MP Jeremy Browne condemned it as "another Government wheeze which is launched with a huge fanfare then disappears...measures to tackle crime need to be properly used."

But before you can tackle crime you need to admit that the problem exists in the first place, not waste huge sums of public money because nobody dares face up to the problem !
