Mohammed Shafiq was rung up by his son Umar on Tuesday lunchtime saying he was being surrounded by youths near his college.

Since the teenage A-level student had been beaten up last October, and had been the victim of a lengthy campaign of bullying by a gang at Burnley College, Mr Shafiq immediately rang police and then drove for 15 minutes to find that police had still to arrive - even though the police station was only half a mile from the park!

As up to 50 students gathered to watch the fight, Mr Shafiq tried to calm them down and protect his son, but he was attacked, hit over the head with a metal bar, stabbed in the stomach and died later in hospital, seven hours after the attack. (Mohammed Shafiq)

Last night an independent inquiry began after senior officers admitted they were "concerned" about the way the original call was handled.

Mr Shafiq is thought to have called Lancashire Police's 0845 non-emergency number rather than 999.

Critics say the dual system has led to confusion about which number to dial. And users of the non-emergency number have complained that it can take the police up to five days to respond to their calls!

A family friend, Shokat Malik, said: "He walked into the situation totally defenceless, a peacemaker hoping to quell what was going on...He was a wonderful man, very hard-working and dedicated to his family...For something so minuscule to escalate into someone losing his life is ridiculous."

But today, in New Labour's Britain, the murder of decent people like Mohammed Shafiq over "something ridiculous" is becoming an everyday occurence!

From Rickell Patterson, who stabbed a man to death because he got in his way while Patterson was riding his bike, to Mohammed Shafiq, the story is always depressingly familiar - a decent man is murdered by scum who care nothing at all about their victims!

And the government, supposed to protect their citizens, couldn't care less and do nothing while decent people are being murdered in broad daylight by scum who have no vestige of respect for anyone, least of all their dead victims!
