Five police officers, dubbed "The Seaside Five" by colleagues, drove their patrol cars to seaside resorts and snapped picture of themselves on fairground rides while they were supposed to be on duty.

It is claimed that the jaunts were part of a game where officers attempted to see who would drive furthest from their station.

The game was only uncovered when a patrol car broke down and senior officers questioned why the patrol car was in another force area, following a breakdown on the English border and a female police officer blew the whistle on their game.

Other trips had taken the officers more than 30 miles away, to the resorts of Porthcawl and Barry Island, out of the Gwent force area. ("Seaside Five")

The Independent Police Complaints Commission was called in to investigate a "misuse of police vehicles while on duty".

The "Seaside Five" were today facing a five-day disciplinary hearing by the Independent Police Complaints Commission and their mobile phones were seized after it was alleged that the officers had been on a log flume ride and used them to record their jaunt.

A source said: "The force is looking to take action against other officers who may have had prior knowledge of these trips - or other officers who knew about it and didn't say anything.

"Mobile phones belonging to the five officers concerned have been seized and the force is looking at the photos that are said to have been taken. They are also looking to see if the photos have been texted to other officers and who they may be."

"The female officer who reported it was concerned taxpayers' money was being wasted and that an area of Gwent was being left uncovered."

It's a pity that these concerns were not felt by the officers involved nor by other officers who must have known about the jaunts by the "Seaside Five!"

But why should they be concerned when such corruption has become endemic through the actions of a government which is itself corrupt and rotten to the very core?
