This is the face of World War II hero Bob Schofield, 89, beaten by burglars just hours after he attended a Remembrance service!

He was at home with his wife, Mollie, 87, when the couple were disturbed from sleep on Sunday night at their cottage in Salterforth, Lancashire. (Bob Schofield)

Mr Schofield, who served on the dangerous North Atlantic convoys bringing aid to Russia, was punched repeatedly in the face and left lying in a pool of blood after valiantly trying to protect his wife.

Hours earlier he had attended a Remembrance Sunday service to commemorate friends and comrades who died while battling mountainous seas, German U-Boats and dive bombers in their bid to help Britain's soviet ally.

The elderly couple were only discovered later on Monday after neighbours raised the alarm after noticing the curtains were still drawn during the day.

Det Insp Dave Groomsbridge, leading the inquiry, said: 'This is a deplorable offence, committed against an elderly, defenceless couple in their own home.

"Bob is 89 years old and can't have been a serious threat to anyone. The level of violence used is obscene."
