The youths were captured on CCTV moments before they set upon the man, repeatedly punching him and stamping on his head.

Police issued the images today and appealed for people who recognised the attackers to come forward.

The victim, a 32-year-old IT worker from Shepperton, had caught the train from Waterloo station after working late and then having a drink with friends.

He had dozed off in the carriage and awoke to find the nine youths going through his pockets.

He tried to move but they punched him in the face and, when he fell to the ground, stamped on him.

The man suffered a broken nose and bruising and his mobile phone was stolen. The gang got off the train at Teddington.

Dc Dan Arundell, of British Transport Police's robbery squad, said: "They went with the sole purpose to rob someone.

"If you look at the footage they walk up and down the carriage and check out others to source victims.

"This guy had been at work late and had one or two pints to unwind.

"Like many of us, he nodded off. This gang spotted him and then beat him up, trying to rob him.

"He has been left in shock by what happened to him, very traumatised.

"Getting the train was part of his daily routine and it is now something he does not look forward to."

Mr Arundell added: "This was a sustained, brutal and cowardly attack and one of the worst I have seen.

"It was one man against nine. All the suspects are quite strapping and young. It is completely sickening, there is no other way to describe it.

"They acted like a pack of wolves in the way they targeted and surrounded him.

"The level of violence was astonishing. There were other members of the public on the train but they were not bothered."

The youths were all aged between 17 and their early twenties and got on the train at Kingston station at 11.45pm on 18 July.
