Roger Day was a quiet 67-year-old bachelor, who was killed by 17-year-old Steven Ward, after he refused to give any more money to Katherine Chainey, his girlfriend, who had been blackmailing the frail pensioner for over two years. (Steven Ward)

Steven Ward punched Mr Day, who fell down onto a concrete driveway, cracking his head, and died the next day in hospital from "catastrophic brain injuries."

At his trial he was found guilty - of manslaughter - and sentenced to just EIGHTEEN MONTHS in youth custody!

EIGHTEEN MONTHS for the murder of a frail pensioner - which means he will probably be out in just NINE MONTHS!

Katherine Chainey also received the same sentence on four counts of blackmail and both defendants were told by the judge: "You made a misery of what turned out to be the last years of his life."

The last years of his life had been made a misery by a concerted campaign of blackmail and threats by Ward and Chainey who had constantly demanded money from the frail pensioner.

Roger Day had lived next door to Katherine Chainey's father some years previously, and would give her occasional gifts of money when she visited him, but her father opposed these gifts.

Chainey began pestering Mr Day for money "because he was a soft touch" but later her demands turned turned to blackmail, threatening to tell her father about the money he had given her!

Roger Day was terrified her father would attack him and handed over thousands of pounds to her and Ward.

Until the day he refused and was murdered by Steven Ward!

Ward was told by Judge Charles Gray: "Your punch was responsible for the death of an old man who had done you no harm...your treatment of this elderly and vulnerable man was unforgivable."

But all decent people in this country will think that a sentence of eighteen months for the murder of frail pensioner Roger Day is equally unforgivable!
